Introduction: Everyone loves a good story.

At campgrounds across the country this month, stories will be told over sticky s’mores as the listeners lean in with suspense. The beaches are lined with sunbathers reading novels, and the movie theaters are packed with kids on summer break catching the latest release.

Whether we hear, read, or watch stories unfold — they often have a significant effect. Stories help us understand facts by giving them real-life context and deeper meaning. When Nathan the prophet confronted David about his adulterous relationship, he did so by telling a story that provoked David’s righteous anger toward his own sin.

There is something within us that connects with a story better than the plain facts without dressing. This is why Marketing 101 classes always include the statement “tell a story.”

The God who created us put this connection in our hearts, and when He stood on earth in the flesh, He used stories to teach his followers. Jesus used parables so that the truth could be found only by those who valued it and leaned in to listen.

“And when His disciples asked Him what this parable meant, He said, ‘To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that “seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’ ” (Luke 8:9-10)

Jesus used words and concepts that the listeners could relate to and understand.

This month we are going to take a deep dive into these parables. We will look at the symbolism within, the physical meanings, and the spiritual meanings as a way of leaning in to listen and hear everything that He is teaching.
